The year 2020 has come with a lot of surprises with the major one being a world pandemic but no one expected a political surprise in the just ended Ghana’s 2020 election. A new dawn in Ghana’s politics or it’s just a nine day wonder.
With the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) being the two major political parties in Ghana who often battle fiercely to win the seat of the government every four years as the 1992 Constitution of Ghana requires, Ghanaians always look at one the so called “smaller political parties” who would pull a surprise and we had it this year.
The Ghana Union Movement (GUM) founded and led by Christian Kwabena Andrews (Osofo Kyiri Abosom) as its presidential candidate pulled a big surprise leaving most Ghanaians jaw dropped by the political party’s performance in the 2020 general elections.
The political party which was founded on 10th March, 2019 miraculously emerged 3rd as the NPP and the NDC respectively leaving the other smaller political parties far behind from reaching the top.
Other political parties like the Convention People’s Party (CPP) which was founded by the great Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1949 couldn’t perform as good as GUM did in the just ended general elections.
Christian Kwabena Andrews of Ghana Union Movement (GUM) had 53,313 votes representing
0.42% of the total votes cast in the 2020 election. Far better than the votes of CPP, Akua Donkor’s GFP and Henry Herbert Lartey’s GCPP put together.
Many Ghanaians have always waited for a political party that could give the NPP and NDC a fight to end the two political parties monopoly run of affairs in the country. The question most Ghanaians keep on asking “is Ghana going to see a new dawn in the political sphere in the near future? “
