I remember how my uncle who has made a home in Koforidua in the Eastern Region would speak with delight in his eyes and smiles curving his lips whenever he spoke of the young budding ladies in town-Koforidua Flowers they called them.
Before my uncle let me on it, anytime anyone said Koforidua Flowers in a conversation, I thought it was because the town was beautified with ornamental plants oblivious to me that it was because Koforidua was majored with inexplicably drop-dead gorgeous ladies.
The ladies from this part of the Eastern Region were indescribably refreshing— a sight to behold for all eternity. They came in all shapes and sizes with differential complexion.
A flower is either dark with her backside and hips appropriately placed coupled with juicy melons on her chest or she is light-skinned with her skin brighter than the colours that come together to form the rainbow.
The in-betweens are the best, they are neither fair nor dark, just chocolaty and caramel like but that made them no less beautiful than the rest.

Soon, Koforidua Flowers became a tag line. A catchphrase of a sort and the ladies from there became the true definition of the now trite line; the best comes from the East.
Their beauty was not hard to notice in a room full of thousands of other ladies. It was intimidating to be in the same space with ladies from this town to say the least.
One thing that remained peculiar about many of them (and I say this because I had a firsthand experience with some of them) is the known fact of their promiscuities.

I am no saints now and I was no saint then but you dare not kid around with these ladies. In simple words, and without ambivalence, I would say Koforidua ladies were spoilt, rotten spoilt for the lack of a better dignifying word in the early 90’s.

I had my Senior High School Education in the Eastern Region and Koftown Girls were the ish that time. They were the ones chasing the big men, running away from school, breaking the hearts of lads in schools and returning to the dorms with packed food and fat purses.
These girls were the girls who would go to town and married women would be ridiculing them, shouting on top of their voices, alerting other wives to hide their husbands because the home wreckers are in town.
Placing Koftown Girls and sexual obscenities in the same sentence was not alien; they lived the tale and always had one story or the next to tell from their fun and sex-capades.

Men feared them but could not resist them. As someone would say, Koftown Girls were like deep-fried butter, unhealthy but simply irresistible and no matter how many distasteful heart breaking and soul-wrenching stories people hear about them, men would with no hesitation indulge them in relationships and bedroom activities.
These days, when you stroll through the principal streets of Koforidua, you can count the number of their flowers on a single hand.

What happened to all the flowers in Koforidua? The town that used to boast of all the beautiful ladies to ever walk this earth do not have that luxury anymore.
The last time I was in Koforidua, I was shocked to see that all that they had on their streets were foodstuffs and clothes amongst other things that are not as charming and eye-catching to waste site on as their flowers were.

We can say that the flowers have withered and what’s left is a bunch of wannabe slay queens and azonto girls but recently, the wind has taken a new direction leading most of the Koftown ladies to the path of academics bringing back the true pride associated with the phrase-Koforidua Flowers.

It used to be; “the next time you are in Koftown, you better look out for their signature B-Foster bread and thick iced-kenkey to satisfy your cravings rather than looking left, right, centre to catch a glimpse of a flower to pluck because there is none and even if you find one, you would be disappointed with how it looks…”
But now, there are a new breed of Koforidua Flowers bringing back the pride of the East. A walk through most of the tertiary institutions in Ghana shows most tagged beauty with brains ladies are from Koforidua and are doing enormously good in academics.
Nice and interesting article. Well done
Thanks dear
