Undoubtedly, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United departure has left a void, they’ve spent millions of money to replace the highly-rated superstar but none has been successful so far. Five players have donned the number 7 shirt and they still have less than 50 Premier League goals between them.
One player who was brought to fill in the boots of Ronaldo was the then 20-year-old Tiago Manuel Dias Correia popularly known as “Bebe”. At age 20, Bebe was expected to be his successor. Manchester United spent $11M for the “New CR7” whose story is unbelievable.
Two months before joining United, he was still living in an orphanage, after just a few friendly matches with the Vitoria Guimaraes Queiroz, Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at that time recommended him to Manchester United.
“Bebe is the only player I signed without seeing him in action, Real Madrid were on his tail, I know that because Jose Mourinho told me Real were ready to sign him and that United jumper in front of them, we took a wee bit of a gamble.” Alex Ferguson wrote in his book “My Autobiography, 2013”.
This gamble appeared to be a good one as Bebe excelled in his first game with Manchester United. He even scored in his first champions league match. Then, there came the English press, they started to link him to Ronaldo, but his following matches and seasons turned out to be painful. He was too immature to succeed. In an interview with Metro UK in 2013, he talked about how he wasn’t serious with Manchester United.
“I never took Manchester United seriously, I was alone in England and I was still a child”, His relationship with Sir Alex became complicated. ” He told me to cut my hair, it will look better, so I cut it the same day. In the next training session he didn’t recognize me. I went past him many times and he didn’t know me”.
Bebe was loaned to Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü after a dull spell at Manchester United, playing just seven games and scoring twice in two seasons at Old Trafford. It didn’t go well got him at Besiktas either as he got seriously injured there. He was also excluded from the group after a night out in a night club. He’s played for six different clubs since his spell Besiktas. He couldn’t become the “new CR7” as the press and sports journalists predicted, he was lazy, not committed enough and the language barrier also had an effect on him in England.
Bebe is currently playing in Spain for Rayo Vallecano at age 30 now.
The “new CR7” hype is dead the same as how his career started illustriously all because he failed to maybe work hard.
Without hard work, talent is of no use!!
